Life is getting busier and busier with more work to complete and activities to attend, meaning less family time. One Principal took this issue to heart by bringing Penny Wars to two elementary schools.

If you’re like me, you aren’t familiar with Penny Wars. It’s essentially a game that challenges students to increase reading time along with family time, and give back to those in need. Each student was given a copy of The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies and had reading assignments each night that they had to complete with their family. Students, families and community members from both schools were encouraged to give pennies that would be eventually be donated to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

Ryan Kaczmark, the Principal at both schools, was overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone involved. Students were ecstatic to read given that whoever raised the most money from either school was rewarded with a pizza party. And it worked! According to Kaczmark, local banks were experiencing penny shortages from the number of people requesting pennies!

This Penny War as a huge success and it taught students real-world lessons, such as the importance of community service, communication, and reading. What better reason to try this out with your school or class!
