How do we translate our unique form of democracy to the Spanish language? The New York Times is slowly but surely attempting to figure it out. The Times launched a Spanish or “en Español” feature in February of 2016, publishing about 10 out of the roughly 300 articles per day, exclusively in Spanish. Since then, they have been writing about the US election in Spanish and trying to figure out how to translate certain democratic terms that do not exist in the Spanish language.
